Last week, [info]purpleglitter and I found that the landlord at her old place had murdered a nest of starlings, ripping apart the nest and throwing the babies down to the ground like they were worthless. Just getting their down in, eyes never opened. They never saw the sun. We buried them in the back.

Today, the tree cutters came to the back yard here. Supposedly just to cut the branches overhanging the neighbor's, they instead cut main branches which may have had one or two subbranches overhanging the neighbor's yard, but most of which were not over the fence at all. Renting, I have no real control over any of this.

I don't understand the reason people need heavily nitrogenated death-yards. "Kill everything but grass. A dandelion! Kill it! Kill it! No flowers here! Nature is just weeds. Throw on more chemicals on... pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer... everything! It surely won't run off anywhere. Must have that perfect patch of stale green nothing, because lord knows if anything wild and free grows it'll be anarchy! Nature is ugly and must be controlled, but oh yeah, save the rain forests — nature is only ugly if it's where I can see it."

People who kill animals ought to go to hell, IMHO. We have fostered and flourished and set free to soar a baby blue jay and a baby green heron in the past year. I thank Goddess that we were given the chance to experience such a wonderful thing. We actually brought them in our house and fed the baby blue jay by syringe :)

I am so glad that you gave the babies a sweet burial.

We have alot of development in the area where I live. A lovely tree covered road - with oaks - is now only a distant memory. How can the people who do this sleep at night? A small pond along the path where I walk has been filled-in, and "rental homes" have been built. What an oxymoron.

Most of these new houses have no trees! I hope their electric bills soar to the heavens!

Sorry to be so ugly,

Sandi*

I agree with your sentiment. I hate the lawn chemical phenomenon. Makes me
feel ill when i go near cause once i got poisoned with those chems.

I would probably get into face of landlord for taking down bird nest or
possibly report them to the game warden for taking protected species.

Starlings have no legal protections.

Good on you both for burying those babies. I'm so sorry that you had to find them in that state, though.

South Florida is "controlled" nature in the way that you mention. Perfectly manicured sod yards and pre-planned tacky landscaping. Ugh. I love the wild, overgrown yards and woods. I missed it so much, so I'm very glad to now be in near-rural upstate New York.

I am so with you on this one.

It's so sad that people are so afraid of reality and nature and life...

I once had a landlord who mowed my pumpkins.

And all of my gardens were completely leveled as soon as I moved out (if not sooner).

Silly, silly humans.

(Oh, and that really sucks about the birds!)

On a lighter note, I came home to see a squirrel sitting at my computer. Inside the house. It was sooooo cute. I think it finally made it's way back outside, after I left all the doors and a window open. Though it was hiding under our bed for a while, and could still be there for all I know.

I would have loved to see that, it does sound incredibly cute. This story cheers me up a bit. Thank you.

Seriously. (some) People suck.

Renting, I had no control over my landlord deciding to decimate our lush beautiful yard full of wild flowers and grasses. I about cried looking at the plain dirt and rocks left in the wake.

Dandelions are the most optimistic plants on the planet. I have a picture somwhere of an old woman watering a dandelion in a cracked, desert-like place, with no other plants around, just the cracked, dry earth. I think of it every time I feel buried in problems/worries. I wish I knew where it was so I could scan it for you; it's really beautiful.

My god that's awful. :( Poor things.

I agree. We do not use any pesticides here on our property. And yes, there are weeds. So what? We and the local wildlife will live a longer, happier life. Not only that, but our pets aren't poisoned by the shit they put on lawns that nobody thinks can possibly do an ounce of harm to any living thing except weeds.

That's horrible! What harm were those baby birds doing to anyone that they deserved to be killed? :(

I can understand people setting traps inside the house for insects and rodents, since those critters will actually infest your food supply, but what justification is there for killing birds in the backyard?

Ugh. I'm not a fan of manicured, sterile lawns with no wildlife, I'd much rather have untrimmed trees filled with wild birds to watch.
