The economic stimulus deal has convinced me that there is no hope for United States politics. Let's collectively borrow $146,000,000,000 and have ourselves a great little shopping spree! That'll fix everything! It's like looting the safe while the ship is sinking: you're going to miss the lifeboats.
I don't think I'm going to vote in the upcoming election. I just don't see the point. It doesn't matter who wins, the Democrats and Republicans pull the same crap and the only difference is the spin they put on it. The system in the United States is broken, it's only a matter of time until it implodes.

You're half right: it doesn't matter whether you vote for the Demopublicans or the Republicrats. They've been playing good-cop/bad-cop since Eisenhower warned us to beware the military-industrial complex. However, it's gotten this bad several times before in US history. You might recall that the Republicans were an upstart third party not so long ago. Find or start yourself a third party and make it work.

i'm planning to vote for cynthia mckinney on the green party ticket. i know it's just a symbolic vote, but i'd rather do that than vote for some democrat who i don't really agree with but would maybe be better than a republican. watching the state of the union last night was just depressing. it really gave me a sense of how both parties really have the same basic special corporate interests in mind.
I vote green party too. I am not sure who for now.
Maybe the president alone doesn't deserve credit for the state of the economy, but suffice it to say that under Clinton the federal government's deficit, grown under Reagan and Senior, was changed into a surplus. We were on our way to paying off the national debt, in a slow and steady manner that debt payoff tends to be. Under Junior the deficit has come back with a vengeance and we are again stealing money from the next generation.
I agree that the two parties are essentially the same on a lot of issues, but the ability to handle economics in a reasonable manner is not one of them.
Tax-and-spend does seem to be morally superior to borrow-and-spend, but both parties stand for more spending. Clinton's surplus was a fluke, the result of capital gains windfalls from the stock market bubble, not fiscal responsibility.
Won't be voting either. The system is the problem - even if there was a candidate who wasn't compromised, as long as rampant corporatism rules our country, we'll always be screwed. | |
