Doing It Myself

I went down to New England Photo this afternoon and learned that [info]zarthon's assessment of how much my camera will cost to repair was much more accurate than mine, and unfortunately the cost of getting my camera fixed is well over what I can afford to spend. On faith that it will be fixed, I bought the new lens cap I've been needing.

I'm going to see if I can repair the problem myself without taking the camera apart. There is at least a chance that I might be able to get it working and the risk of breaking the camera further is relatively low as long as I don't actually pry it open. Christian suggested swabbing the prongs in the battery case with alcohol. If that doesn't work, I'm going to attempt ti gently but firmly reposition the prongs. I have a few other ideas up my sleeve, but if none of that works I'll have to reassess my options.

Virginia

I'm back in Boston. I had a great deal of fun with My sister, niece, brother-in-law, and mom. Maddie is a little ball of energy. Well, not little, she's quite big for a 7 year old. Smart and creative, but I just can't keep up with her.

The day I arrived, Thursday, we pretty much stayed around the house and relaxed. My mom had already been there for several days and was already settled in.

Friday, Christian stayed home while Maddie, Bridgette, my mom, and I went down to Georgetown. We hit Lush and Godiva and went to Dean & Deluca for lunch. While I've seen central meter machines in parking lots, I'd never seen a central machine for street parking before. I guess it is more efficient than having a separate parking meter for each spot, I'm just not used to it. The biggest disadvantage I see with the central machine system is that if it breaks down it disrupts the use of a number of parking spots at once.

Saturday we drove into Virginia through wine country and went to Linden Vineyards (nothing to do with Second Live). That was my favorite part of the trip down. Relaxing doesn't even begin to describe the place. Surrounded by rows of grapes and vine watching the clouds shadow-dance on the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cigar Christian gave me to smoke at the vineyard not only went perfectly with the cheese and wine, but also with the surrounding tranquility.

Sunday, I got up later than I had planned, but not so late that it caused any hassle in catching my flight. Upon leaving, Christian gave me some cigars, along with a 15-pack of Rocky Patel vintage 1992s, one of my favorites. My mom gave me a wonderful dragon cane when I arrived at the house and I was a bit worried about getting on the flight with 2 canes, but I didn't have any hassle and the return trip from Reagan National to Logan went smoothly.

I had hoped to get some good bird pictures, but unfortunately my birding camera is not working. I noticed it my first day there. It seems to be a connection problem with the battery prongs, which should be repairable. But, I was glad to see that Maddie loved birds and birdwatching despite her father's hatred of them.

“It's 9am here, and there's about a 3/4ths a centimeter of ice over everything outside. Not that much, but enough to pull the powerlines down so that we have no electricity here at my parents house.

Looks like this weekend will be spent mostly just sitting in the house.

The light flowing through the ice does make for some nice photographs, and I have taken a couple this morning.

I'm not quite fully awake yet, and I will make a fully lucid voice post one of these days — I promise. I just haven't in the last couple.

I should conserve battery power, I don't know when I'll be able to recharge this cellphone.”

“I'm at logan airport. I only got 1 hour of sleep last night, so it's gonna be a long day.

I'm waiting for my flight. I got here quite early, which I always end up doing. So, it leaves at 7.

I feel sort of like a zombie.

Just stay awake.

I..I only got 1 hour of sleep last night. It's going to be a long day.

I forgot to charge my phone all the way, so I'm gonna have to conserve power.

I'll probably sleep on the plane.”

Mystic Lakes

[info]purpleglitter dropped me off by Lower Mystic Lake on her way to work and I had a good half-hour walk home. Next time she want to drop me off by the marina on Upper Mystic Lake; which I think sounds great, however I want to have a battery for my camera first. The Mystic Lakes are an area of Arlington I haven't really explored yet, and I think it's about time I do.

Home Walk

Just got back from a wonderful walk around Arlington. As I currently don't have a battery for my camera, I brought a cigar instead. A fine cigar goes well with a good walk the same way a fine wine goes well with a good meal.

As much as I thought Ontario was beautiful, nothing can compare to or rival New England. The more I really spend time just being in and observing Arlington, the more I realize that this is my home. If I move, I do not want to move to any other town.

“Greetings! I am on the bus, sitting at the station in Buffalo, New York. As I crossed the border to the U.S., I saw them shooting off fireworks! I guess they were excited I was coming back!

The trip here to Buffalo was nice, that I got a got a ride from Aleriel and Cait, but I kind of... got... sick on the way. It wasn't very pleasant. We had to pull over on the side of the road, and then again at a rest stop, and it was kind of miserable. But I ended up feeling better, and was feeling pretty good by the time we actually got here. It wasn't that bad, and I'm very grateful to Aleriel and Cait for giving me a ride.

I did forget one thing, which is natural: I forgot my camera battery back in Saint Thomas. *chuckles* Of course; cant' leave ---- something. And I did a double check and a triple check, to see if I forgot anything. But, alas, the camera battery is just a little black flat thing, and I guess I just missed it. I noticed it when I pulled the camera out to take a picture, that it was lighter and it didn't have the battery in it, but I figured it was just in the bag... but, alas, not. I had forgotten it. So, I guess I will ask Amber if she can send it to me. I hate to be a pain, but...

She's been so nice, it was so great seeing here. I know she doesn't feel that the trip went well, sometimes, because, y'know, it was too hot to do much, but I enjoyed just being around her and meeting her, and it was really cool, and I had a lot of fun! And, as I said before, if I knew that the trip was going to be as hot as it was, I would have still gone. And the last two days weren't hot, and I got out several times. And I went into town, and looked around the shops, and, generally, I liked the area. It was pleasant, relaxing, and I feel like I got a much-needed break. And I got to meet Amber in the process, which was excellent and wonderful!

And, I'm heading back home, which is also good, because I get to see Lake, and Anthea, and John, and Mazzy, and Lia, and Jymi, and everyone! And, it'll be great! And, I will be home soon! I get at home at 9:45 in the morning, I will be sleeping on the bus. Just a straight stop from Buffalo to Boston, you know, a couple stops, but no changing the bus.

So, I guess... that's the post! And I will be back in Boston very soon!”

“I'm in Buffalo, and it's neitherday; the time between days. I slept through Syracuse, and I'm in Buffalo, as I already said. I'm not actually that tired, but I am a bit discombobulated. I got a lot of good sleep on the bus, which was OK... uncomfortable... And I will be crossing the border soon! And that will probably mean the end of the voice posts because I don't know the voice post numbers after I cross the border.

I'm using the pay phone at the station because my battery is almost dead. I wasn't conservative enough in the use of my cell phone, and I don't want to run the battery out the rest of the way because I still want to be able to use it if any sort of emergency or need would arise.

But... yeah, I'm *laugh* just getting used to owning one! This is the first time I've ever owned a cell phone, ever! And it's kind of strange-feeling. I beep, now. I never really did that, before.

So.. though, no one's called me, yet, so I've never really heard the noise that my cell phone makes. And... I guess that's it for this update. My next update will probably be from Canada, or at least hopefully will be.”

No Ride Today

[info]purpleglitter was supposed to give me a ride to therapy today, but unfortunately her battery is dead. I don't have enough time to get there on the bus. So I guess I miss therapy today. It's good in a way, as I was nervous meeting a new person right now. But it's also bad because I have so much I need to talk about. Hopefully we can reschedule the appointment. Murphy's Law I guess.

Plattsburgh

Date and Time  - Aug. 31st, 2002, 12:37 am

Tuesday morning, [info]riga_mortia and I set off for Plattsburgh, New York. We got out of the house very early, and made good time to South Station. The air seemed hopeful and the prospect of leaving the city for a few days was very exciting.

Things started to go wrong when we got to the ticket counter at Greyhound. They ended up charging us a rate several hundred dollars over what they had quoted us over the phone. Not knowing of any other choice, we forked over the cash.

Quickly, I realized I had forgotten my ID. Realizing that this meant that the trip would be much more problematic, we went decided to take the next bus out, and take a taxi back to [info]riga_mortia’s house and pick up my ID.

My ID wasn’t at her house, and we were running out of time, so we called another taxi to run back to my house, as I was sure I must have left it there.

On the way out to the taxi, [info]riga_mortia had a nasty fall onto an evil metal thing laying on the sidewalk. She ended up with a nasty looking wound on her knee. I got our luggage together and she limped into the taxi.

My ID wasn’t at my house either. To add to the fun, we quickly discovered that [info]riga_mortia had left her purse in the taxi.

[info]grrldan arrived home and offered his help. And what a wonderful help he was. He patched up [info]riga_mortia’s knee very skillfully and made us both much-needed cosmopolitans.

I decided to call the liquor store I had gone to the night before, in a last hope that it was where I lost my ID. I got on my computer to get the number for the store and found that my monitor had completely died.

[info]grrldan looked up the number for me on his computer. However, when I called, I was told that my ID wasn’t there either.

Giving up on my ID, we called the taxi company and asked about [info]riga_mortia’s purse. They had it and [info]grrldan said he would give us a ride to retrieve it as well as anywhere else we needed to go. I can’t thank him enough for all the help he was to us.

[info]riga_mortia and I figured out that it would actually be cheaper to rent a car and drive it to Plattsburgh than to take the bus, even with the 15% charge for returning the tickets. So, we called up several rental places to get a car. However, no one would rent us a car, because I don’t have a credit card or my own auto insurance (either one would have worked) and [info]riga_mortia is under 25 and only has a permit.

We worked out a plan with [info]katia25 ([info]riga_mortia’s stepmother). We would wire her the money to rent a car. She would rent it, drive from Plattsburgh to Boston then drive us back up to Plattsburgh.

First thing was first, the tickets and the taxis had wiped out our cash reserves. We needed to go to my bank. As I had lost my bankcard the week before, and now didn’t have my ID, I wrote [info]grrldan a check for the money I needed and he ran into the bank to cash it. A few minutes later, he came out and told me the people in the bank wanted to talk to me inside.

They told me that my check was suspect, because it was written out of sequence (another symptom of my absentmindedness). However, they had my signature card on file at the bank, and I was able to get the money out myself.

Next stop was Stop and Shop to wire the funds for the car. Again, [info]grrldan came to the rescue. As the only one with an ID at that point, he had to be the one to actually send the money on its way.

After Stop and Shop, we went to the Yellow Cab office. On the journey there, we encountered a traffic jam. After waiting about 15 minutes in the baking sun, traffic began to move again, and we got [info]riga_mortia’s purse.

Before he had to be on his way for his own scheduled activities for the day, [info]grrldan dropped us off at the DMV so that I could get a temporary license for the trip.

When [info]katia25 arrived, we grabbed our stuff and piled into the car. Our troubles were over, or so we thought.

We quickly got lost in Vermont. We spent a long time on the empty highways in the land of moose and bumps. After wandering and wandering, we found a hotel and asked for directions. We apparently missed our turn by an hour and a half. Instead of having to back track, we were directed on an alternative route. All in all, the 3 hour trip ended up taking more than 6, and by the time it was over both [info]riga_mortia and I were both feeling slightly ill.

We checked into our hotel, only to find that it was a complete pit. It was more of a no-tell motel than anything else. The one redeeming quality, is that it had a rustic Bonnie and Clyde feel to it. I felt that the feds would be breaking in the door any minute.

In the morning, we carted ourselves over to the Super 8. A little more pricey, but a lot less shitty. At this point we both realized that the slightly ill we felt the night before was not going to simply go away. The slightly ill had definite plans of being more than slightly.

In the very late afternoon, we finally got over to see [info]riga_mortia’s family. They were all very accepting and nice. I got along with all of them very well. We all got quite floopy, and Chantea ([info]riga_mortia’s sister) got quite a bit too floopy.

[info]katia25 dropped us off near the beach, where [info]riga_mortia and I splashed together on the beautiful shores of Lake Champlain. It was probably the most beautiful part of the entire trip, however being wet in the chilly night air probably didn’t help us with our developing colds.

By the time we woke up the next morning, both [info]riga_mortia and I were really feeling sick. Not only that, having spent so much time in close quarters with all the stress of the trip, we starting to get on each other’s nerves. We never yelled, but we definitely weren’t getting along very well.

Pat ([info]riga_mortia’s dad) and [info]katia25 took us to Ponderosa in the afternoon. I was worried there wouldn’t be anything to eat, but to my surprise the buffet had a selection of vegetarian options.

The food did not sit well with [info]riga_mortia, who was rapidly getting more ill than me. She ended up getting sick all over the bathroom of Ponderosa. Afterwards, we went back to the hotel so she could get some rest.

In the evening, we went back to [info]katia25’s and Pat’s house and watched The Way of the Gun with Ryan Phillippe. I enjoyed the movie, and definitely recommend it.

Back at the hotel we decided that with both of us feeling ill and the trip generally not going very well, that we should head back home Friday as originally planned, instead of Saturday morning as we had been considering.

On the ferry across Lake Champlain on the way home, I decided to take a picture of the mountains above the water. Of course, I dropped the camera. It bounced off the deck, and I watched in slow motion as it splashed into the water below. At least it wasn’t the one I had taken the pictures on earlier in the trip.

Back in Boston, I hoped that we could finally relax, but new drama has come forward. Things just don’t seem to settle down nowadays. Like the Energizer bunny, it just keeps going and going and going.

Lonely Furby

Date and Time  - Mar. 24th, 2002, 05:15 pm

Lonely Furby

lonely furby
quietly sitting
years
dusts covering
its poof of hair
still smiling
still staring
eager-eyed
though
the batteries
long
since dead

it seems
to wait
as if for
the day
that it will
awaken anew
talk once more
and laugh and giggle
and blink and sleep

there is a pain
behind its
hollow smile
there is a want
in its
pleasing eyes
something still stirs
under the dust
