Thanksgiving Was

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving. [info]merryperseis came over to join [info]purpleglitter and I in the livingroom. She had never seen our new place before and she arrived with perfect timing – just 10 minutes before dinner

I cooked portobello and artichoke stuffing, corn on the cob, baked homemade macaroni and cheese, edamame, and a pumpkin and carrot pie that turned out to be more of a pumpkin and carrot pudding — but still quite good, if I do say so myself. We all stuffed ourselves silly and had a good and mellow evening. Good company and too much food is how Thanksgiving is meant to be.

Project Three Meals - Attempt 17, Day 1

Date and Time  - Oct. 31st, 2007, 04:20 am

Current Mood  - tired tired
Current Music  - air purifier

For breakfast I had creamy parmesan noodles, for lunch I had eggs and hashbrowns, for my healthy snack I had a mandarin and a sugar-free popsicle. I got in well over an hour of exercise walking from my place to [info]merryperseis's place and back.

I would have made, except that my dinner wasn't exactly reasonable. I went to Rudy's with [info]purpleglitter, [info]zarthon, and Jeff. I ended up eating chili con queso, a jalapeño poppers, and a bean & cheese burrito. The popper and burrito would have been fine &ndash but the chips and chili con queso were not only too much, it's hard not to categorize them as junk food.

Worms

Date and Time  - Oct. 9th, 2007, 03:04 pm

Current Mood  - okay okay
Current Music  - budgies in conference

From the The Universal Household Assistant or What Every One Should Know (1884):

Worms — treatment of. — Some members of the profession still cling with bull-dog tenacity to the opinion that worms do not affect the health of children, and that they are natural to them. The latter may or may not be true, but when they accumulate in the intestines, they produce the same disturbance that any foreign, indigestible substance would do. We find the picking of the nose, swollen lower eye-lids, restlessness in sleep, groaning, gritting teeth, starting, and lastly, spasms.
Worms kill more children than teething*; and when you find the above symptoms with a strawberry tongue and a fever, which will attack several times daily, going off as frequently in cold sweats, you can swear that you have a case of worms, and had as well prepare and attack them.
Now as to the best means of getting rid of them. I use the fluid extract of senna and spigelia in teaspoon doses for patients of eight or ten years of age, and less in proportion, night and morning, for three nights and days, following this up each morning with a good dose of castor oil, provided the senna and spigelia does not act. Then wait three days, and again institute the same proceedings, and for the same length of time.
This treatment is for the lumbricoid. For the oxyuris, or "thread worm," I see any bitter infusion by enema, sulph, quinine, followed by an enema of common salt and milk-warm water half an hour afterward, which will destroy and expel them.
The symptoms of the presence of the worm are the same as the scratching of the anus. If every practitioner will use these he will be gratified by the restoration to immediate health of many a little sufferer, who would otherwise linger in sickness for many months and perhaps eventually die.

Worms in Horses — to cure. — A remedy for worms in a horse which has never failed of a cure is to take half a cup of pure, hard wood ashes, finely sifted and mixed dry with the mash or food. If one dose should not prove sufficient, repeat it after a day or two.

Worm Lozenges. — Powdered lump sugar, ten ounces; starch, five ounces; mix with mucilage; and to every ounce add twelve grains of calomel; divide into twenty grain lozenges. Dose, two to six.

Worm Medicines. — 1. Two tablespoonfuls of pumpkin seeds peeled and pulverized, or given to a child who will chew fine. The seed does not kill, but stupefies the worm. The next day give castor oil or any other cathartic, and if the worms are present in the system they will pass off.
   2. Make an infusion in the proportion of one pint of boiling water to one ounce of dried hyssop flowers; let it stand ten minutes; pour it off into a wine bottle, and take a wine-glass, or rather less, according to age, two or three times a day.

* Teething was thought to be a common cause infant mortality in the 19th century, however most "teething deaths" were actually caused by opium poising from the opium and morphine teething infants were treated with.

swiped from [info]dan4th:

another year

I thought that the version of PhotoShop that came with Orac (the name I have given to the used computer purpleglitter recently bought me) was the scaled down version, unlike the professional version on Clementine. I woke up well this morning and was hoping for a very productive Project Schedule. Skye is egg bound with a soft shell egg.

sometimes the only thing that makes death unappealing is that I do not believe it ends existence.

dan4th took a couple pictures of me in the sunlight last weekend. Take also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and spelt, and put them in one vessel, and make bread of it.

I thought that I could not be any more disgusted by the Bush administration, but his response to the Israeli assault on Lebanon has proved me wrong. I've improved some of my old userpics. I had a great time this evening celebrating purpleglitter's birthday with zarthon, recoiling, and of course purpleglitter. The paste of purity has run its course and I have scrubbed it off the wall of corruption. Yesterday, President Bush told Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, "This business about graceful exit just simply has no realism to it at all."

Yesterday for breakfast I had masala ramen, for lunch I had pink beans in a coconut mustard sauce on naan, for dinner I had grilled portabella on a bun preceded by bread and macaroni and cheese balls, I didn't have a healthy snack. I had faux buttered popcorn at the movies with [info]zarthon and [info]purpleglitter and I didn't get any exercise.

Project Three Meals - Attempt 13, Day 2

Date and Time  - Jul. 9th, 2006, 12:02 am

Current Mood  - sleepy sleepy
Current Music  - air conditioner

For breakfast I had faux duck ramen, for lunch I had mac and cheese with black beans, for dinner I had tomatoe soup with mozzarella cheese, and for my healthy snack I had wasabi peas.

I got in more than enough exercise in a long walk that took me down Mass Ave to a tree-lined trail along the sludge river, then over Clarendon Hill, through Teele Square, and finally to Davis where I got a french soda at the Diesel Café.

Success again. Perhaps this is lucky 13.

"Take also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and spelt, and put them in one vessel, and make bread of it"
    -Ezekiel 4:9

[info]purpleglitter and I picked up a loaf of Food for Life Ezekiel 4:9 bread at Trader Joe's this morning, and true to it's name that list is exactly what it contains (with only water, yeast, and sea salt added). It has to be the most delecious bread I've ever gotten from a store. Not only does it taste great, it is extremely healthyful and contains all 9 essential amino acids. We have decided to make it our standard bread.

Project Three Meals - Attempt 12, Day 15

Date and Time  - Jun. 26th, 2006, 04:42 pm

Current Mood  - drained drained
Current Music  - budgies in conference

I know it's a bit late in the day for this post, but here goes. Yesterday I had spaghetti o's topped with mozzarella for breakfast, mac and cheese with black beans for lunch, a veggie burger with fries for dinner. I had a pickle for my healthy snack. I also ate a cookie and didn't fulfil my exercise quota.

I have been considering giving up on Project Three Meals, but I think I'll keep going for now.

Project Three Meals - Attempt 11, Day 3

Date and Time  - Apr. 9th, 2006, 09:20 am

Current Mood  - groggy groggy
Current Music  - budgies gurgling

I got in plenty of exercise between helping Jeff move in and walking to [info]kyrene's house. However, I didn't do so well on the eating front. I had bhindi masala with red cargo rice for breakfast, pizza for lunch, Spanish rice with broccoli for dinner, and bean curd jerky for my healthy snack. But a couple junk food binges ended my hopes of a successful Project Three Meals Day. I'm not giving up, I'm still trying!

Project Three Meals - Attempt 6, Day 21

Current Mood  - mellow mellow
Current Music  - lake humming

It is awfully late in the day to be posting this, but here is yesterday's Project Three Meals. Exercise went wonderfully. Got in a good three fourths an hour wandering around looking for [info]kyrene's party. Foodwise, well, I ate a lot and a lot of it wasn't healthy: macaroni and cheese with [info]purpleglitter; bean and rice pilaf, cream puffs, cheese and crackers, marinated mozzarella, cheese-its, patatoe chips, triple chocolate cake, apples dipped in caramelly goodness, ricotta and spinach pierogies, ass kicking peanuts, chocolate cream pie, and other assorted foodstuffs at the party. So yeah, I guess I'll count that as a day I didn't make it.

Project Three Meals - Attempt 6, Day 20

Date and Time  - Oct. 1st, 2005, 12:14 pm

Current Mood  - nerdy nerdy
Current Music  - budgies gone wild

As predicted, yesterday follow the plan to well and I'll make the same prediction for today and tomorrow because of planned activities. Monday hopefully I should be back on track. Anyway here's the damage:

No exercise. Macaroni and cheese for breakfast, Rotini with tomatoe sauce and cheese for lunch, bean quesadilla for dinner, and fruit with dip at [info]purpleglitter's birthday party for my healthy snack. My unhealthy snacks were key lime pie ([info]purpleglitter's birthday "cake"), pre-popped buttered popcorn, and a Milky Way candy bar.

Project Three Meals - Attempt 6, Day 19

Date and Time  - Sep. 30th, 2005, 12:05 pm

Current Mood  - groggy groggy
Current Music  - squeaky splashing in his bath

Adding to my losing streak, yesterday again no exercise and too much snacking. For breakfast I had bhindi masala with rice, for lunch fettuccini with butter sauce, for dinner a bean quesadilla, and no healthy snack. However, I did have two unhealthy snacks: almost half a Symphony bar and some pre-popped buttered popcorn. The outlook for Project Three Meals today isn't so great either, as it's [info]purpleglitter's birthday, and that likely means I won't be much in control of my meal plan.

Jello and Mice

Date and Time  - Jan. 9th, 2005, 10:27 pm

Current Mood  - mellow mellow
Current Music  - silence

The mice in the house aren't lasting very long now that Jello is back. First day back in the house and he's already caught one. Soon they will all be gone. I'm glad I at least saved Marshmallow. She's doing well in her cage, enjoying raisins, rice and beans. She runs on her wheel a lot, which keeps me up at night sometimes. I wish I could save the others, but I fear Jello will eat them before I can get humane traps.

Didn't make two in a row. I had soft boiled eggs for breakfast, scrambled tofu for lunch, rice and beans for dinner, and pumpkin seeds for my healthy snack. However, I also had a lot of Atomic Fireballs and aloo tikki chat. Oh well. Try again tomorrow.
