Videotaping the Bomb Squad

One of the men criminally charged after placing blinking cartoon advertisements around the city and causing a terrorism scare videotaped a police bomb squad removing one of the devices, but did not tell the officers the object was harmless.

Surveillance cameras caught 27-year-old Peter Berdovsky videotaping officers removing what they thought was a possible bomb last week.

"Mr. Berdovsky didn't do anything inappropriate," his lawyer, Walter Prince, said Tuesday.

Well, he's screwed. If you buy his lawyer's claim that he just happened to be innocently taping the incident, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

Next Move, Old Game

Turner Broadcasting System has accepted full responsibility for the guerrilla marketing campaign that caused a security scare across Boston Wednesday.

WBZ-TV's Dan Rea spoke with Mayor Thomas Menino Friday morning and Menino said that the company had agreed to pay about $250,000 for the costs created by the scare.

Phil Kent, Turner's C-E-O, issued an apology in full-page ads in Boston newspapers Friday for "the confusion and inconvenience" caused as highways, bridges and river traffic were shut down.

Peter Berdovsky, 27, and Sean Stevens, 28, were released Thursday on $2,500 bail each after pleading not guilty pleas to charges of placing a hoax device and disorderly conduct.

full article

If this is accurate, it changes my mind about the situation. Turner should not get off with a bribe. I still believe Berdovsky and Stevens deserve to face charges, but many others deserve to face charges as well. If the city of Boston is not going to prosecute the people at Turner and Interference who orchestrated the stunt, the city has no business persecuting the bottom-level guys who did their employer's dirty work.

I would like to note that this does not change my conviction that the police did a fine job. This is on Menino, not the police.

Viva Corporate America!

I've been very impressed by how many Boston area liberals have gained a sense of rebellion in recent days by rallying around mega corporation Turner and their corporate lackeys who planted the devices. It's almost surreal that commercial culture has taken such a grip that even rebellion against authority has a corporate edge. None of the myriad of REAL abuses of authority since 9/11 have garnered such a tremendous response. Fail to give a favored marketing firm free reign to do whatever they please in the city, especially if they're advertising an important cartoon network show, and you have a massive outcry.

Hiding the Truth

Berdovsky sent an e-mail to friends at 1:25 p.m. telling them not to talk about the marketing scheme to promote the animated television show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" on the Cartoon Network.

"My boss from the Cartoon Network’s ad agency just called -- she is asking that we pretty please keep everything on the DL," or down low, wrote Berdovsky, according to a copy of the e-mail provided to the Globe.

...

Moments after facing the felony charges, Berdovsky and Stevens mocked reporters at press conference outside court, deflecting questions about their culpability with non sequiter quips about haircuts in the 1970s.

"Hair today, gone tomorrow," said Stevens,

Berdovsky added: "I'm quite enjoying this."

Because actively suppressing critical security information to further the greed of your corporate masters is fun!

Does anyone else find it odd that Turner-owned CNN continued to hype the suspicious devices story even as Turner executives were aware of the situation and what exactly the devices were? If anyone was intentionally spreading fear it was Turner, not Boston Police Department.

A lot of people seem to think the response to the Mooninite devices was overblown and paranoid. While I certainly agree that a lot of the post-9/11 security in the United States has been based on paranoia, I find it completely reasonable to treat strange unknown electronic devices attached to supports for overhanging highways with a high degree of suspicion.

Spirited Away by Rose Red

Date and Time  - Jun. 11th, 2006, 10:39 am

Current Mood  - mellow mellow
Current Music  - fan

[info]purpleglitter and I watched Spirited Away last night. We both loved the movie. Like something out of a dream, surreal and mad. No one dimensional characters, in fact nothing in the movie was one dimensional. The paradigm shifts constantly throughout and the end is so far from where the story began, that even it's shadow cannot be seen.

[info]purpleglitter usually professes to hate all anime. Actually she professes to hate all animation in general. But there have been exceptions to her dislike of animation, such as Grave of the Fireflies andThe Lion King. So, in reality she's just very picky and tends to go for the well-written and produced feature films rather than the animated series. She strongly dislikes the silly and slapstick side of animation which tends to be very heavy in the series. She also dislikes the high-pitched shrilly voices that are found in many animations. She likes good writing, a good story, and painting-like scenes.

The night before last, [info]purpleglitter and I watched The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer with [info]recoiling. The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer is the prequel to Rose Red. It further develops the back story and was interesting to watch. However, the movie would not be able to stand well on its own, and would be unlikely to appeal to anyone who is not already a fan of Rose Red.

The South Park Xenu Conspiracy Strikes Back

So, Scientology, you may have won this battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun!

Temporarily anozinizing our episode will not stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies.

Curses and drat! You have obstructed us now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu.

- Trey Parker and Matt Stone, servants to the darklord Xenu.

I never much cared for South Park before this whole Scientology conflict, but now I must admire them.

Updated Profile

Date and Time  - Sep. 7th, 2004, 02:51 pm

Current Mood  - happy happy
Current Music  - fan

I have updated my profile. For simplicity's sake, I'm only posting the parts I changed here.

New Profile

I have finally found a place I fit in. I have a place in my community. I am the madwoman.

I am a multiple system. In older entries I used "we" often, but nowadays I usually (but not always) use "I". Just easier to write that way. I still identify as plural.

I'm also a bisexual, vegetarian, polyamorous mtf pre-op transsexual. I have two wonderful girlfriends ([info]purpleglitter and [info]merryperseis) and two wonderful cats ([info]mazzycat and [info]madeleinecat)

Old Profile

I don't really fit in anywhere, but I'm okay with that.

I have dissociative identity "disorder" (or the condition formally known as multiple personality "disorder".) You will notice that in the course of this journal I will use "I" for me and "I" and/or "we" for the system as a whole or the Central Group. Occasionally another alter will make a post, but for the most part this journal is mine.

I'm bisexual and a pre-op transsexual (mtf).

I've left behind my long gothic phase, and am currently molding my style into something infinitely more fabulous. I still have some gothic friends and gothic tendencies, but have been burnt too many times in the subculture to wish to continue immersion in it. I have decided to start my own.

I have very eclectic musical tastes, as one might imagine. Diamanda is Goddess.

My religion is my own. While I draw from both Neopaganism and Buddhism, most of it is simply what makes sense to me.

I'm vegetarian. Meat is yuckie.

I have two wonderful girlfriends ([info]purpleglitter and [info]merryperseis) and one wonderful cat ([info]mazzycat).

Buttercup is my favorite Powerpuff Girl.

[info]merryperseis and I were heading to an anime showing at MIT, when my brain froze up in Porter Square. This would have been a minor inconvenience if a police officer didn't see me twitching on the ground. He called in an ambulance and off to the emergency room I was swept. They kept me there for several hours asking me questions about how often I have "seizures". I told them I have them every day, but I didn't know if I'd call them "seizures". My mind locks up. I dissociate. I freeze. I twitch. It happens. After my bloodwork came back all good, they let me go. I feel bad about spoiling [info]merrryperseis's birthday night out, but she appears not to be perturbed. That makes me feel better.

Went over to visit [info]dan4th today. We watched Watership Down, an excellent animated movie that I'd heard of but never seen. Bunnies Rule.

After Watership Down, we played Snarf Quest. I really enjoyed learning Snarf Quest and now want to get the game for myself. Alas, finances won't permit any miscellaneous expenditures at this time. Maybe next month.

[info]dabunny joined us stir fry and a viewing of Dark Star, a comical 70's sci-fi film. It is very difficult to tell if they meant it to be a serious movie or not, but was fun to watch nonetheless.

[info]zarthon and [info]purpleglitter came over last night. [info]zarthon brought a couple episodes of Cowboy Bebop, which I thought was only so-so. The animation was excellent, but the plots were lacking, and the humor was off. It could have just been that he had a dubbed copy. I don't know.

-----

Swept and mopped the downstairs hall and both sets of stairs today. Also made some progress in cleaning the kitchen. [info]merryperseis did a lot of work on the upstairs bathroom. If we do a little everyday, it won't be long before the [info]house_of_clocks is actually clean.

Sara came over yesterday. It was nice to see her again. She has the most wonderful energy. I can't help but be in a better mood when she's around. She helped convince me to make peace with the gnomes. She feels I am bless that fae follow me around, even if they are often annoying. I think she's right. I feel I've been a bit like Gargomel. I think I'll be a bit nicer from now on.

After Sara left, [info]riga_mortia and [info]purpleglitter came over. We were joined in my room by [info]merryperseis and Robin (the new roommate). The five of us had a wonderful time talking and listening to music. Good friends. Good fun.

[info]riga_mortia spent the night. I've missed her so much. Last night was the first time I saw her beautiful face since November. I plan on seeing her often from now on. I'll probably see her tonight at Ceremony.
