When radio host Jerry Klein suggested that all Muslims in the United States should be identified with a crescent-shape tattoo or a distinctive arm band, the phone lines jammed instantly.
The first caller to the station in Washington said that Klein must be "off his rocker." The second congratulated him and added: "Not only do you tattoo them in the middle of their forehead but you ship them out of this country ... they are here to kill us."
Another said that tattoos, armbands and other identifying markers such as crescent marks on driver's licenses, passports and birth certificates did not go far enough. "What good is identifying them?" he asked. "You have to set up encampments like during World War Two with the Japanese and Germans."
At the end of the one-hour show, rich with arguments on why visual identification of "the threat in our midst" would alleviate the public's fears, Klein revealed that he had staged a hoax. It drew out reactions that are not uncommon in post-9/11 America.
"I can't believe any of you are sick enough to have agreed for one second with anything I said," he told his audience on the AM station 630 WMAL, which covers Washington, Northern Virginia and Maryland
...
"Because basically what you just did was show me how the German people allowed what happened to the Jews to happen ... We need to separate them, we need to tattoo their arms, we need to make them wear the yellow Star of David, we need to put them in concentration camps, we basically just need to kill them all because they are dangerous."
...
Those in agreement are not a fringe minority: A Gallup poll this summer of more than 1,000 Americans showed that 39 percent were in favor of requiring Muslims in the United States, including American citizens, to carry special identification.
39% percent is a scary number. The Nazi Party never got 39% of the German vote before Hitler became Chancellor. In fact, in the election just prior to his becoming Chancellor, the Nazi Party received only 31% of the vote. The 39% of the American public supporting the marking and separation of Muslims does not necessarily mean we will have a repeat of the Nazi atrocities, but it does mean that we are closer to the edge of that precipice than we'd like to believe.
I know it may seem odd that this message, a message broadcast until now primarily by radical activists, is being picked up by a beauty corporation. There may be worry about whether or not Dove actually believes the message or sees it as a powerful marketing ploy. However, I do not think Doves intentions here matter as much as their actions. By broadcasting this message, they are lending vast resources to the message that this message would not otherwise have had. They are reaching audiences that are not normally within the reach of radical activists. Corporations have vast resources and they aren't going away anytime soon, it is better to have some of them on our side.
The internet has been out at the house_of_clocks all week. Comcast was supposed to be over today "sometime between 7am and 7pm" to fix it. However, Comcast decided the problem was with the utility box on the poll and not with our cable modem which they had earlier concluded was the problem. They didn't call. After we waited for them all day, recoiling called them a half hour before 7pm and they then told her that they had rescheduled. Now they will be coming by Monday some time between 7am and 7pm.
I'm going to talk to merryperseis (who handles the cable bill) about switching to RCN when she gets home. From what I've heard, RCN has changed a lot since I had the billing problems with them many years ago. I think it's a good time to try them again.
I had a great time this evening celebrating purpleglitter's birthday with zarthon, recoiling, and of course purpleglitter. I made blackberry sours which were loved by all and gave purpleglitter a framed picture of her I did in pastels. I hope she had a good birthday. Berv love Lake.
The models in their examples are already pretty damn skinny and need no "slimming". If you're going to pre-program your cameras with body dismorphia, at least offer a better "filter" than simply reproportioning the image. I have no intention of ever buying any HP product again.
This has been a weekend of many good happenings. invalid_userid came down from Maine to visit. She arrived Friday and we watched Doggie Poo that evening. Her, purpleglitter and I all went up to Mount Auburn Cemetery for photos and good seeings yesterday before the rains came and we spent today doing various fun hoppings around.
Also very exciting is that recoiling moved into the house_of_clocks this weekend. She is one of the most wonderfully awesome people I know and I think this is the dawning of a new era.
I was quite productive yesterday, well more productive than average for me at least. In addition to my daily chores (animal care and cooking), I reglued the twine on my staff, I did a much needed load of laundry, and did an good hour of cleaning the downstairs of the house_of_clocks with recoiling.
Yeah, it's kind of pathetic what I consider a good and productive day. But, I want to surf this wave and see if it builds. After Skye's vet appointment at 3pm, I want to do some more cleaning at the house_of_clocks and do some crafting. Perhaps I'm on the verge of at least getting my surroundings and activities in order. I've been on this precipice for a long time, so I'm not going to get to carried away with optimism.
recoiling will be moving into the house_of_clocks on September 1st. I have a really good feeling about this. All the founding members of the Second House of Clocks will be again living in the Second House of Clocks. It's a new beginning and sense great things ahead.
Some pictures of recoiling I took today by Spy Pond:
recoiling and I did about 4 hours of cleaning in my room. It's not done. Many times I've made significant progress only to have my room fall back before it got to the point of being clean. However, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel this time. So close I can taste it.
I'm going to clean my sheets now. I may finish the cleaning tonight or tomorrow, and if I don't recoiling will come back and help me Thursday.
I'm giving recoiling a staff as thanks for her efforts, and after she's done we're going to polyurethane it together in the playroom. She's awesome and been so incredibly unbelievably helpful. I think that my mental state will be much improved when I truly have a livable room.
“Greetings! I am on the bus, sitting at the station in Buffalo, New York. As I crossed the border to the U.S., I saw them shooting off fireworks! I guess they were excited I was coming back!
The trip here to Buffalo was nice, that I got a got a ride from Aleriel and Cait, but I kind of... got... sick on the way. It wasn't very pleasant. We had to pull over on the side of the road, and then again at a rest stop, and it was kind of miserable. But I ended up feeling better, and was feeling pretty good by the time we actually got here. It wasn't that bad, and I'm very grateful to Aleriel and Cait for giving me a ride.
I did forget one thing, which is natural: I forgot my camera battery back in Saint Thomas. *chuckles* Of course; cant' leave ---- something. And I did a double check and a triple check, to see if I forgot anything. But, alas, the camera battery is just a little black flat thing, and I guess I just missed it. I noticed it when I pulled the camera out to take a picture, that it was lighter and it didn't have the battery in it, but I figured it was just in the bag... but, alas, not. I had forgotten it. So, I guess I will ask Amber if she can send it to me. I hate to be a pain, but...
She's been so nice, it was so great seeing here. I know she doesn't feel that the trip went well, sometimes, because, y'know, it was too hot to do much, but I enjoyed just being around her and meeting her, and it was really cool, and I had a lot of fun! And, as I said before, if I knew that the trip was going to be as hot as it was, I would have still gone. And the last two days weren't hot, and I got out several times. And I went into town, and looked around the shops, and, generally, I liked the area. It was pleasant, relaxing, and I feel like I got a much-needed break. And I got to meet Amber in the process, which was excellent and wonderful!
And, I'm heading back home, which is also good, because I get to see Lake, and Anthea, and John, and Mazzy, and Lia, and Jymi, and everyone! And, it'll be great! And, I will be home soon! I get at home at 9:45 in the morning, I will be sleeping on the bus. Just a straight stop from Buffalo to Boston, you know, a couple stops, but no changing the bus.
So, I guess... that's the post! And I will be back in Boston very soon!”
purpleglitter and I watched Spirited Away last night. We both loved the movie. Like something out of a dream, surreal and mad. No one dimensional characters, in fact nothing in the movie was one dimensional. The paradigm shifts constantly throughout and the end is so far from where the story began, that even it's shadow cannot be seen.
purpleglitter usually professes to hate all anime. Actually she professes to hate all animation in general. But there have been exceptions to her dislike of animation, such as Grave of the Fireflies andThe Lion King. So, in reality she's just very picky and tends to go for the well-written and produced feature films rather than the animated series. She strongly dislikes the silly and slapstick side of animation which tends to be very heavy in the series. She also dislikes the high-pitched shrilly voices that are found in many animations. She likes good writing, a good story, and painting-like scenes.
The night before last, purpleglitter and I watched The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer with recoiling. The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer is the prequel to Rose Red. It further develops the back story and was interesting to watch. However, the movie would not be able to stand well on its own, and would be unlikely to appeal to anyone who is not already a fan of Rose Red.
I had fun with recoiling at pride, even if it was a bit colder and rainier and windier than I would have liked. It's been an odd June weatherwise. Most of the candy thrown from the floats fell in the puddles, but the people passing out sunscreen and fans were hilarious. Obviously the event was planned in anticipation of a warmer day.
Every year the corporate side of pride gets more and more blatant. Near the beginning of the parade was a loud and obnoxious Delta Airlines float. Its booming stereo, by far louder than anything else in the parade, literally made me nauseous. I couldn't decided if I though the bad placement of the Stolichnaya float directly in front of the "Sober and Proud" group was amusing or disturbing.
All in all, though, I had a good time and enjoyed being there. While the weather wasn't wonderful, it was still a nice change from the normal swelter Pride is usually held in and groups like the Stonewall Warriors still counterbalance the corporateness to a degree. And of course, the Dykes on Bikes were kick ass.
Over the last several days, I've been going out more than I have in quite a while.
Wednesday night, zarthon took purpleglitter and I out to Uno's to celebrate purpleglitter's fabulous new job. zarthon accidentally spilt my entire Second City Whisky Sour on me as soon as it arrived, and I smelt completely like a brewery. I used the foamy handsoap in the Uno's bathroom to wash the aromatic drink off my clothing. The rest of the dinner went wonderfully and their new olde fashion tomatoe soup was quite lovely.
Thursday night, purpleglitter and I went over to iamacliche's and recoiling's apartment for a small holiday gathering. I always love hanging out with them and it is convenient that they live so close. They gave me, among other things, a turtle coprolite
