Use Cloud

I just wrote and added a "use cloud" to my journal. Not too terrible useful, but I think it's neat.

Fixed the problem in Internet Explorer. Apparently, while Firefox accepts background images within <tr>'s, Internet Explorer doesn't. I moved the background images to the <td>'s and everything is working fine now in Explorer.

I just looked at my new style in Internet Explore. Not good. Not good at all.

New Layout

Date and Time  - May. 8th, 2007, 05:15 pm

Current Mood  - accomplished accomplished
Current Music  - budgies in conference

I finally finished my new layout. I'm actually thinking of submitting it. It is obviously borrow heavily from generator, but has quite a lot of changes and enhancements. It has all my tag clouds, the link category system, allows for semi-transparent .png layout element, and is fully customizable.

Semi-transparent .pngs are something I came up with a while ago for my myspace and wanted to bring over to LiveJournal. Doing that meant getting rid of the background colors and using images for every background. I'm very happy with the results.

It could still use a bit of optimization to reduce the number of time-outs (it's a complicated script, and LiveJournal limits how long code can). I'm not getting to many, and a quick refresh usually does the trick if it happens. I've seen system styles time out, so I'm not that worried — I just know I can do better.

To cut down on the number of links on each page of my journal, I've modified my layout to only display as links the tags at the bottom of each entry that have more than one use.

Layout Addition

I added a tag cloud to the bottom of each entry. Creating the clouds was easy, optimizing the code so that the 20 clouds didn't cause my pages to constantly time out was the hard part.

Zoomable Tag Cloud

I turned my tag cloud into a zoomable tag cloud. I started with the a non-zoomable tag cloud I ganked from rephrase's Zesty and very heavily modified it. I'm very pleased with the results. This is just what I needed to get my geek blood flowing again. I like this feeling. I want more.

I finally fixed my journal layout to work properly in Internet Explorer! (it already worked properly in FireFox.) Now I just have to get around to tweaking my leave a comment page to match the rest of my journal... another time perhaps.

Tables are dangerous things.

Sorry if I messed up your friends page last night, it's fixed now.

Only some of you would have been effected, because many styles (such as mine) are resilient to the type of error I had in my table.

I should test my tables on a less error-resilient layout in the future.

Alignment Issues

Date and Time  - Sep. 30th, 2005, 03:09 pm

Current Mood  - obsessive obsessive
Current Music  - fan

As some (though I imagine not most) of you may have noticed, I've been slowly changing my layout. I'm slowly moving it toward something I'm satisfied with. Each transitional stage should look better than the previous one. Last night I happened to see my layout for the first time in Internet Explorer. The metadata alignment is completely off. I know the alignment issue is minor, I'm very anal about my alignments. It pains me greatly. I can't stand having bad alignment. I'm going to have to fix it very soon. However, I don't know if I'll have time to look through the code until after this weekend.

Someone from the abuse team responded to my support request. As typical with the abuse team, they picked out a couple key words in my message and sent an inappropriate form response.

Dear LiveJournal user,

In order to investigate this matter, we will need for you to go to http://www.livejournal.com/abuse/report.bml and follow the procedure described in http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=105. In particular, we will need specific links to the items you believe to be in violation of the Terms of Service. A brief summary of a situation, or a cut and paste of some of the content in question, is not enough for us to begin an investigation.

Regards,
Theresa
LiveJournal Abuse Team

I replied:

This is not intended to be an abuse report. I am pointing out a security hole and suggesting that it be fixed. I brought this up in the suggestions community, but I was told by the mod to bring it up here instead.

If you want a link, try http://www.livejournal.com/users/yaai3 (if you are running internet explorer it may crash your computer, otherwise it will just annoy you).

Redirect Abuse

Date and Time  - Aug. 30th, 2005, 10:01 pm

Current Music  - lake watching sex in the city

Abuse of <meta http-equiv="REFRESH"> is becoming more rampant, 4 days ago I submitted a suggestion to [info]suggestions about banning the tag. However the moderator told me to bring up the issue with support. Seeing as the redirecting pages have a potential to cause much more problem than they currently do if they become more wide spread or become used for more malicious purposes than trolling. Seeing as all a user has to do to fall prey is to click on the journal in question, it's a big security hole, and it amazes me that LiveJournal hasn't done anything about the it already, seeing that they obviously know about it. With little confidence that it will actually be fixed until abuse is more wide spread, I entered the following support request anyway (clicking on the journals listed could crash your computer):

Journals like yaai3 and pok_cmap are abusing the tag, <meta http-equiv="REFRESH">. It is only a matter of time before spammers begin using this tag as well to redirect users to porn sites and/or sites containing adware and other malicious programs. This tag needs to be banned.

Made the Switch

I just switched my journal over to S2. I did this primarily because I wanted my tags to be functional. I have been lax at tagging my entries while the tags while I was with S1 and need to catch up. I'm currently using one of the default styles with almost no customization. It's pretty ugly, and I will eventually want to customize my layout, but when I will get around to it I do not know.

Tag Mess

Date and Time  - Jul. 11th, 2005, 03:37 pm

Current Mood  - lethargic lethargic

I need to fix my tags. There are plenty of typos and spelling mishaps that have snuck into my entries. This will be much easier to fix when I switch to S2, as I'll be able to search entries by tags. I'm very anal online, which is odd as I'm not usually anal IRL. At least I'm not now. Back when I played Magic: The Gathering, I was incredibly anal about deck and card organization. I used to be very anal about my dress and appearance as well. Not so much anymore. I don't have something of equivalent analness in my offline life currently, but I still see it's potential in things. I'm not sure what determines what I will and will not be anal about. However, I know that I have a strong desire toward analness with the tag system. The miscreant tags bother me greatly. I want to standardize them. It's a mess currently. I need to dive into S2 soon.

LiveJournal Plans

I'm thinking of moving all the pictures I've put on my account over the years onto the LiveJournal scrapbook system. If something happens and I can no longer host my site, all my LiveJournal pictures will become broken. However, if I have my picture uploaded to LiveJournal it will be around as long as LiveJournal is, as I have a permanent account. This seems a better option, but it will be a lot of work. I will probably do it as I go back and slowly tag my old entries. I also need to switch to S2 at some point, as I want my taggin effort to be useful.

The tag system has me thinking of finally changing my journal over to S2. I've resisted the move for quite a while, but tags may just make it worth doing.

I made my first attemt at changing my journal over to S2. The result was quite ugly. I don't feel like playing with it tonight, so I switched back to my S1 style. I'm sure it won't be long until I permenantly roll out a S2 journal style.
