This photograph was taken about a little over an hour before I left Saint Thomas for London — after the hair fire incident. The candles in the photo are the ones that my hair was caught with. The robe I'm wearing in the photo is the inexpensive article of clothing I lost on my journey back to Boston.

Trip Home

Date and Time  - Jan. 27th, 2007, 03:52 pm

Current Mood  - exhausted exhausted

[info]gryffyn gave [info]goldmourn and me a ride up to London, where I caught the bus back to Boston. In short order I screwed up boarding the bus and spilt my entire cup of coffee (a lot of it going on my skirt).

However, things seemed to go a bit better until we reached the border. Compared to the security personal at the Canadian border, the Americans are fascist assholes. Someone in front of me put his hands in his pocket while waiting for the border guard to confirm his identification, for which he received the threat: "WE'RE NOT PLAYING GAMES! DO YOU WANT TO GO TO JAIL RIGHT NOW?". His was hardly atypical treatment. Greyhound had scheduled 15 minutes to cross the border. However it took us over an hour to get through security, and there was no one ahead of us. The imagery reminded me more of the check points in the old Soviet Bloc rather than something I'd hope to expect from the United States. How times change.

Luckily the hold up at the border didn't cause me to miss my connection at Syracuse. Other than losing an inexpensive article of clothing, the rest of the trip went smoothly — I walked out of the bus station the exact moment [info]purpleglitter was pulling into the parking lot.

I didn't do my normal voice post updates during this trip, because the entire LiveJournal voice post system was down the entire trip.

“I'm in Detroit waiting to depart for London, Ontario. If all goes well, Amber's friend Gwen will pick me up in London and drive me to Saint Thomas and I'll see Amber sometime this afternoon.

The next time I post will probably be from Ambers house. At least will hopefully be, because if I'm posting from somewhere else that would mean that somewhere my plans went awry. But, I don't anticipate that.

That is all.”

“It's cooled down in here. This bus is going to take me all the way to London. I'm going to try to get some sleep, hopefully the rest of the trip will go well.”

“I'm in Chicago, I got on the Detroit bus, we made it in time. It's hot as hell on this bus, but at least I'm on it. If it doesn't cool down, I imagine this will be a sleepless night. I just can't sleep in this kind of heat. I should have worn something lighter — like a tank top and shorts.”

“We left Champlain, Illinois about 10 minutes ago, we're running about 25 minutes behind schedule. I only have a 20 minute layover scheduled for Chicago, which means we're going to be cutting it VERY close to make that Detroit bus.”

Voice Post: Bust Details

“Greetings. I'm in Springfield, Illinois.

I've found out more about what went on back in Saint Louis. Apparently the security check we went through which I thought was ridiculous, because they had you walk through the line and then go back to the end of the line after you'd gone through the security check. It seemed relatively easy to just get into the line without going through the security check. I thought it was rather stupid at the time because of that.

But, realize it was actually pretty sneaky. What they did was when you went through the check, they put a small orange sticker on your ticket. Getting on the bus, they flagged anyone who didn't have that orange sticker. The two people who got busted didn't go through the security check and when they got of the bus [security] subjected their bags to an extra-intense screening and, i guess, found the drugs on them.

I still don't know if I'm going to be too late getting into Chicago. But, it looks like since we were only 15 minutes late and I was scheduled for a 30 minute layover, we should be able to make it.

Cross my fingers.”

“I'm waiting on the bus at the bus terminal in Saint Louis. They pulled someone off the bus, actually two people, and apparently they were trying to transport something illegal (not sure what it was). I guess they discovered that their checked baggage wasn't checked correctly, and checked their baggage. So, they got busted.

I'm hoping that this doesn't screw up my transfer in Chicago, because that would have a domino effect and screw up my transfer in Detroit as well. This would make the trip a very long trip. It's already long, but it would be extremely long. But, I know that kind of thing happens on Greyhound sometimes. So, if it happens I'll just deal with it. I guess I'll know more when I get to Chicago.”

Ice and Ahead

Date and Time  - Jan. 14th, 2007, 11:26 am

Current Mood  - awake awake
Current Music  - children playing upstairs

The phone and DSL are back up and the ice is melting a bit. However, we're supposed to get a few more waves of ice later today and early tomorrow. After my voice post this morning, I went outside to take some photos and in the few minutes I was out there I heard a tree collapse in the woods nearby. My brother tells me he could hear several large branches or whole trees falling every this morning near him.

-----

I ordered my bus tickets online last night, but ended up with the wrong time for my departure from London. The confirmation has me leaving at 3:50AM, but there is no way I can get a ride to London at that hour. I was planning for my departure time to be 8:00PM. Talking to a Greyhound Canada representative on the phone, I was told that I could use the tickets for any departure time as long as they are for the same day and the same person. I should be fine

“Good morning!

We got some more ice last night, the top of one of my parents trees came down. And while we have electricity this morning, we have no telephone or dsl. I'm calling in on my cell phone which apparently still works...

I... got my tickets last night for the rest of my trip. Two tickets to London, where I'll be picked up, and then go to Saint Thomas from there. And er, then tickets back from London to Boston.

And I guess, well. I'll fill you in on yesterday. I had a good time. We all, felt great to be here with my brother and sister, Maddie and Jonas, Christian and Heather, and of course my mum and dad. It's been the whole family, it's something that hasn't really happened in a long time.

i've been having a great time. The ice makes it a bit surreal, but if you know me surreal is good.

I guess that's it for the update this morning. I'll probably do more updating because, you know, I'm addicted to LiveJournal. I make lots of updates. So... that is all.”

Safe Arrival

The bus from Buffalo was full, and I was told I wasn't going to get a seat. I told them that the bus from London to St. Thomas didn't run again until next week and if I missed that bus I would miss the one to St. Thomas. I told them if I didn't get on they needed to give me a refund and tickets home. They squeezed me on.

But, I made it, including the insanely long walk with my luggage to [info]goldmourn's house. Settling in, I'll post more later.

“Good hello, Livejournal Land! I'm making this post from my new cell phone which John got me -- yay, John! -- got me it for the trip. I'm heading off, we're just passing through Newton, which I guess is the first stop, and then a stop in Worcester, and then Albany, Syracuse, and Buffalo, where I'm going to be having a layover from 3:35AM 'til 4:45AM. Whoo! That does not sound fun. Then to Toronto, to London, and then Saint Thomas. And, I will be there! And I will get to see Amber. That will be great. *laughs* I will be very excited and probably very tired.

And then I will be heading back on the 4th and getting home on the 5th. But, on my way back, I have a five-and-a-half hour layover in the evening, in Buffalo. So, I have no idea what to do for five-and-a-half hours in Buffalo. If anyone is from Buffalo, or knows the Buffalo area, and can tell me if there is actually anything to do in Buffalo, which, I don't know if there actually is... or might even want to meet me, because that would be great, and I'm always interested in meeting new people. But, more likely, just tell me what I can do in Buffalo for five-and-a-half hours. That would be great, because I have no clue.

I will be heading home. We are stopping at Newton, and we are at the commuter rail stop in Newton where they pick up the bus passengers. And... I guess, that is this post! Hello, goodbye!”
