Married

Date and Time  - Jul. 14th, 2008, 11:44 am

Current Mood  - happy happy
Current Music  - Nick Cave - The Ship Song

[info]purpleglitter and I got legally married Saturday. We intentionally kept this under the radar and had with us the bare minimum of people required, we didn't want anything big, over the top, or stressful. We stood together on the shore of Spy Pond, under a willow tree, in the darkest corner of the garden. We could hear the fish splashing as we said our vows.

I am tied to you, my favorite piece of string. The seas may boil and the mountains may fall to dust and the stars may dim and die. But to you, my favorite piece of string, I shall be tied forever. And after forever has come and gone, forever again I shall love you.

Ringworm Remedy

Date and Time  - Oct. 29th, 2007, 12:50 am

Current Mood  - happy happy
Current Music  - air purifier

From the The Universal Household Assistant or What Every One Should Know (1884), posted at the request of [info]kitsunekaboom

Ringworm — remedy for. — When the disease does not come from direct contagion, children are generally in a poor state of blood, and good living, sea air, and tonic medicines are of great benefit. The following application will frequently be found of much service: Wash the part effected with a little lemon juice; then rub in with the finger a little gunpowder which has been bruised in a mortar. Do this gently about twice a day. Be very careful not to make the skin sore.

Overdue Updates

1) My attempt at stopping my daily intake of caffeine a while back failed, and only took a week or so to fail. I feel hopelessly addicted. I may, however, try again at some point.

2) I have gone back to being vegetarian, no more eating seafaring, non-cephalopod, exotherms. I think I'll probably stay that way.

6 of the 10 most intense Atlantic hurricanes on record (in terms of central pressure) have occurred withing the last 10 years, with 5 of those occurring in the last 4 years.

1 Hurricane Wilma, 882 mbar — 2005
2 Hurricane Gilbert, 888 mbar — 1988
3 Labor Day Hurricane, 892 mbar — 1935
4 Hurricane Rita, 895 mbar — 2005
5 Hurricane Allen, 899 mbar — 1980
6 Hurricane Katrina, 902 mbar — 2005
7 Hurricane Camille, 905 mbar — 1969
8 Hurricane Mitch, 905 mbar — 1998
9 Hurricane Dean, 906 mbar — 2007
10 Hurricane Ivan, 910 mbar — 2004

This represents a clear and significant uptick in the strength of the strongest storms. Global warming is not just a problem the future will have to deal with, it is currently happening on a destructive and deadly scale.

Trying Seafood

Date and Time  - Sep. 3rd, 2007, 01:07 pm

While I was in Virginia, I tried seafood twice. Once in Christian's shrimp quiche. The shrimp had an odd flavor that seemed inherent to them that I either did not like or simply wasn't used to. Either way, I could only eat three of the shrimps before I gave up trying to like them.

Saturday, I tried some of the fish from Maddie's fish and chips at Hunter's Head in Upperville, and I liked it that time. So, at this point I'm not sure if I should go back to being vegetarian or try eating more seafaring, non-cephalopod exotherms.

Seafood

I'm leaving for Washington tomorrow (well, actually Arlington, Virginia) to visit my sister, brother-in-law, and niece. My mom is already there and are visits have been planned to overlap. As some of you might know, I've been vegetarian for 14 years but have been considering eating seafood for some time. There is a good chance that on this trip I will actually take the plunge. The prospect of ending 14 years of vegetarianism is a bit daunting, and I would be limiting my meat intake to sea-fairing non-cephalopod exotherms. I've gone over it again and again for years in my head, working out the logistics of my personal moral code, and I think I'm okay with it.

Lost for the Future

I talked to my sister ([info]ellynx) last night. Apparently Maddie has been very interested in the Baiji for about a year now, and even has a book on them. She's been very worried about them going extinct. My sister is going to have to find a way to tell her six year old daughter that they are most likely gone.

Maddie has told me about her worry that many of the ocean species that she wants to study will be gone. At six you want to tell her she's wrong, but she's right and she knows it. She's a smart kid. I wonder just how many more animals won't she have a chance see? How many more will be gone in just the next few years, especially as global warming kicks into an even higher gear? The world is changing very rapidly.

I got a letter Friday from my primary care nurse. The letter was dated Tuesday, the day after I saw my endo. The letter informed me that she set me up with an appointment for an MRI (albeit non-gallium based). I guess my endo lit a fire under her ass. My endo is good.

I have an appointment with my primary care nurse tomorrow about getting an referral to a rheumatologist. The letters constitute a slight change is sea, and I am optimistic that my appointment tomorrow will go well.
