Waking Up

Date and Time  - Apr. 2nd, 2008, 02:57 am

Current Mood  - optimistic optimistic
Current Music  - air purifier

It's spring and my life is waking up. Just a few years ago, my life was extremely turbulent and my mind was an unpleasant place to be in. Everything was always in flux, but far from always in a good way.

This past year has been calmer, quieter, so stable it has bordered on a bit boring. But, it's been something I needed.

Now, things are beginning to pick up again. However, this time it's different. I can feel the motion of before, but things are clearer. This past year gives me a platform from which to launch from. It has been a place of stable mind and thought that has let me ground and center. The loops are still there in the background, but I know how to work them now. I am not afraid. My eyes are opening. I am awake.

Spring!!!

Date and Time  - Mar. 20th, 2008, 11:01 am

Current Mood  - optimistic optimistic
Current Music  - air purifier

Spring has arrived. Soon, the plants my sister and brother are sending me for my birthday will start arriving and I'll be able to put the compost to good use. They are sending me 3 butterfly bushes, 3 red latham raspberry bushes, and 6 oriental poppies. I'm very excited about gardening this year.

I haven't done any gardening since I rented the house in Columbia, Missouri and grew carrots out back. It was a very small house with a small yard, but it was a house with a yard and it was $185/month. Wow, that price seems great now, I couldn't rent a room for that around here these days. It's a different season here, in more ways than just not being winter anymore.

Thank You LJ, May I Have Another?

Date and Time  - Mar. 13th, 2008, 02:49 pm

Current Mood  - blank blank
Current Music  - Björk & Peter Stormare - I've Seen It All

I doubt I'll leave over the removal of basic accounts. I've already stopped recommending this site to new people, so after grumbling and griping a bit, I'll probably just get on with my journaling. If there is a true mass exodus, I'll join it. But right now, as much as I dislike the direction LiveJournal is going, there still isn't anywhere good enough to entice me away from my permanent account. With all the effort involved in changing journal sites and moving my old entries, another site will not just have to be somewhat better — it will have to be a whole hell of a lot better.

Free Will and Lasagna

Date and Time  - Feb. 15th, 2008, 12:34 pm

Current Mood  - awake awake
Current Music  - prince henry's repertoire of alarm sounds

I made lasagna last night. I never made lasagna before. I don't generally follow recipes when I cook. When I set out to cook something I've never attempted before, I look up a couple recipes and develop an understanding of how the dish works. From that understanding, I create the dish. I don't do rote, never did. Memorization is for machines. Computers memorize the formulas called programs. They do not deviate from their programming. Even when they are programmed to program themselves, they are still subject to the programs that tell them to write the programs. They do not have free will. Not yet, anyway. Someday perhaps and on that day they can cook lasagna.

Economic Stimulus Foolishness

Date and Time  - Jan. 29th, 2008, 06:52 pm

Current Mood  - gloomy gloomy
Current Music  - budgies and tiels in conference

The economic stimulus deal has convinced me that there is no hope for United States politics. Let's collectively borrow $146,000,000,000 and have ourselves a great little shopping spree! That'll fix everything! It's like looting the safe while the ship is sinking: you're going to miss the lifeboats.

I don't think I'm going to vote in the upcoming election. I just don't see the point. It doesn't matter who wins, the Democrats and Republicans pull the same crap and the only difference is the spin they put on it. The system in the United States is broken, it's only a matter of time until it implodes.

Atomic Pom

Date and Time  - Dec. 22nd, 2007, 10:35 am

Current Mood  - cold cold
Current Music  - air purifier

I bought 9 Rip-It Atomic Pom energy drinks at Walgreens last night. They were on "last chance" sale for a $1.09 each. The sale is a mixed blessing — on one hand it's nice to get one of my favorite energy drinks cheep, on the other hand they're cheap because I won't be able to get them anymore.

Braced for the first significant snowstorm of the year. It's already started coming down, not to heavy yet. A quick, but powerful storm — they're predicting 5 to 8 inches (13 to 20cm) of snow in just 6 hours.

Shovel ready, salt laid down. Here we go.

I'm strongly considering deleting the [info]house_of_clocks community. It's been a while since the demise of the second House of Clocks and there will not be a third. The community dates back to the first House of Clocks, but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of nostalgia in the community and I doubt that anyone will ever have use for it in the future.

1) My attempt at stopping my daily intake of caffeine a while back failed, and only took a week or so to fail. I feel hopelessly addicted. I may, however, try again at some point.

2) I have gone back to being vegetarian, no more eating seafaring, non-cephalopod, exotherms. I think I'll probably stay that way.

The War Funding Game

Date and Time  - Sep. 28th, 2007, 11:32 am

Current Mood  - mellow mellow
Current Music  - Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me

The addition $42 billion dollars in war funding requested by the Bush Administration is political move designed to allow both the Democrats and the Republicans to appeal to their bases. It smells of backroom dealing. The Democrats in congress will not approve this additional funding, but instead will fund the war at the originally requested levels. The Republicans can then appeal to their base by saying that the Democrats aren't giving the troops the funding they need, and the Democrats can appeal to their base by saying the actually did something by turning down the Bush Administration's additional request.

In the end, nothing changes.

found via [info]dan4th:

The Canadian dollar reached parity with the U.S. greenback on Thursday for the first time in almost 31 years, capping a spectacular run that has seen it rise 62 per cent since 2002.

The loonie briefly reached $1.0003 US on foreign-exchange markets shortly before 11 a.m. ET, the Bank of Canada said. The currency spent much of the rest of the day flirting with parity — at one point trading at $1.0006 — before closing at 99.87 cents US, up 1.37 cents from Wednesday's Bank of Canada close.

No, no third party candidate or independent can possibly win.

A third party or independent candidate winning is a real possibility, but the ones who have come forward so far don't have a snowball's chance in hell.

Yes, there currently is a third party or independent candidate that has a chance of winning.
0 (0.0%)

I don't believe there will even be an election next year.

Prince Henry is an Alarm Clock

Date and Time  - Sep. 6th, 2007, 11:03 am

Current Mood  - happy happy
Current Music  - air purifier

Prince Henry woke [info]purpleglitter and me up this morning with his best imitation of an alarm. The bedroom is the only room we have that is appropriate for quarantine, so I guess we have a new alarm clock. He's definitely louder than any of the other birds we've had, even Sir Dubbins.

He's gotten plenty of scritches so far today and while the cage he came in is far from toy deprived, we plan to give him a couple of the birdy booty toys from [info]shadowrabbit. I'm sure he misses his old humans, but I think he'll come to like it here.

Doing It Myself

Date and Time  - Sep. 4th, 2007, 05:37 pm

Current Mood  - blank blank
Current Music  - budgies in conference

I went down to New England Photo this afternoon and learned that [info]zarthon's assessment of how much my camera will cost to repair was much more accurate than mine, and unfortunately the cost of getting my camera fixed is well over what I can afford to spend. On faith that it will be fixed, I bought the new lens cap I've been needing.

I'm going to see if I can repair the problem myself without taking the camera apart. There is at least a chance that I might be able to get it working and the risk of breaking the camera further is relatively low as long as I don't actually pry it open. Christian suggested swabbing the prongs in the battery case with alcohol. If that doesn't work, I'm going to attempt ti gently but firmly reposition the prongs. I have a few other ideas up my sleeve, but if none of that works I'll have to reassess my options.
