Atomic Pom

Current Mood  - cold cold
Current Music  - air purifier

I bought 9 Rip-It Atomic Pom energy drinks at Walgreens last night. They were on "last chance" sale for a $1.09 each. The sale is a mixed blessing — on one hand it's nice to get one of my favorite energy drinks cheep, on the other hand they're cheap because I won't be able to get them anymore.

Project Three Meals — Attempt 17, Plan

Current Mood  - awake awake
Current Music  - sir dubbing calling for prince henry

Tomorrow, I'm going to start Project Three Meals up again. The same as it's always been: three reasonable meals and one healthy snack – no more, no less. 30 minutes of exercise a day, minimum. Absolutely no junk food. Sounds simple, should be simple, isn't.

This of course means I won't be raiding the after-halloween candy sales this year.

Supreme Court Refuses to Hear Torture Case

Date and Time  - Oct. 9th, 2007, 01:46 pm

Current Mood  - pissed off pissed off
Current Music  - budgies in conference

A German citizen who said he was kidnapped by the Central Intelligence Agency and tortured in a prison in Afghanistan lost his last chance to seek redress in court today when the Supreme Court declined to consider his case.

The justices’ refusal to take the case of Khaled el-Masri let stand a March 2 ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, in Richmond, Va. That court upheld a 2006 decision by a federal district judge, who dismissed Mr. Masri’s lawsuit on grounds that trying the case could expose state secrets.

...

Mr. Masri contended in his suit that he was seized by local law enforcement officials while vacationing in Macedonia on New Year’s Eve 2003. At the time, he was 41 years old and an unemployed car salesman.

“They asked a lot of questions — if I have relations with Al Qaeda, Al Haramain, the Islamic Brotherhood,” Mr. Masri said in a 2005 interview with The New York Times. “I kept saying no, but they did not believe me.”

After 23 days, he said, he was turned over to C.I.A. operatives, who flew him to a secret C.I.A. prison in Kabul. There, Mr. Masri said, he was kept in a small, filthy cell and shackled, drugged and beaten while being interrogated about his supposed ties to terrorist organizations. At the end of May 2004, Mr. Masri said, he was released in a remote part of Albania without ever having been charged with a crime.

full story

This is outrageous. The blocking of a trial with spurious claims of "state secrets" is, in my opinion, tantamount to an admission of guilt. This crime is even more blatant by the fact that this German citizen was flown to Kabul — an occupied territory of the United States. Does anyone really doubt who's in charge in Afghanistan or Iraq? The crimes of puppet governments are crimes of the puppeteer. It is a further crime that Khaled el-Masri cannot peruse justice in an American court and it is likely that neither those who kidnapped and tortured him nor those that ordered the kidnapping and torture will ever be extradited to stand trial in Germany.

Videotaping the Bomb Squad

Date and Time  - Feb. 6th, 2007, 05:46 pm

Current Music  - budgies in conference

One of the men criminally charged after placing blinking cartoon advertisements around the city and causing a terrorism scare videotaped a police bomb squad removing one of the devices, but did not tell the officers the object was harmless.

Surveillance cameras caught 27-year-old Peter Berdovsky videotaping officers removing what they thought was a possible bomb last week.

"Mr. Berdovsky didn't do anything inappropriate," his lawyer, Walter Prince, said Tuesday.

Well, he's screwed. If you buy his lawyer's claim that he just happened to be innocently taping the incident, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

Cloude and Galileo were fighting over Dandelion, so moved Cloude and Skye into the small flight cage. No problem with the finches. Food was well devoured by all.

No problem with [info]mazzycat. Her food dispenser is filled again. While this means she won't be getting so much wet food, she'll have round the clock access to her dry stuff.

My room cleaning looks as if it went backwards. My room is far messier after this afternoon's cleaning session than it was before. This is principally because I've begun my journey into the Left Closet of Doom and much of the contents yielded by my expedition are scattered about. Some I might try to sell or give away, some I will use, some I'll keep in storage, and much is going to the curb Sunday evening.

I only went in about 7 feet today, tomorrow I'll attempt to reach the back. The Left Closet of Doom will be a large project, and I anticipate the Right Closet of Doom will be more work than the Left even though the Left is slightly deeper.

I'm going to pay some bills, then head over to [info]purpleglitter's to do some laundry.

Yard Sale Fabulous

Current Music  - budgies not sleeping

I went to one of the most wonderful yard sales I've ever been to this morning, less than a block from the [info]house_of_clocks. The place was absolutely mobbed, but the stuff was awesome non-standard yard sale fair and the prices were the best I've ever seen apart from the free stuff shop. I got a bunch of bead/buttons shaped as Chinese coins, two stuffed squirrels (a momma and a baby), a travel box of oil pastels, 2 blank sketch books, 2 cool lockets (on of which I gave to [info]purpleglitter), a pair of vintage cat's eye glasses, and a stand-alone chrome ashtray for the front porch — ALL FOR FOUR BUCKS!!

Imagine: you are a foot soldier in a paramilitary group whose purpose is to remake America as a Christian theocracy, and establish its worldly vision of the dominion of Christ over all aspects of life. You are issued high-tech military weaponry, and instructed to engage the infidel on the streets of New York City. You are on a mission - both a religious mission and a military mission -- to convert or kill Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, gays, and anyone who advocates the separation of church and state - especially moderate, mainstream Christians. Your mission is "to conduct physical and spiritual warfare"; all who resist must be taken out with extreme prejudice. You have never felt so powerful, so driven by a purpose: you are 13 years old. You are playing a real-time strategy video game whose creators are linked to the empire of mega-church pastor Rick Warren, best selling author of The Purpose Driven Life.

The game, slated for release by October 2006 in advance of the Christmas shopping rush, has been previewed at video game exhibitions, and reviewed by major newspapers and magazines. But until now, no fan or critic has pointed out the controversial game's connection to Mr. Warren or his dominionist agenda.
...

According to Mr. Warren, the establishment of this earthly kingdom requires "foot soldiers." As part of his plan, Mr. Warren said he would encourage laypeople to "adopt" needy villages overseas in order to plant churches, expand business opportunities, educate children, influence governments, and overthrow corrupt political leaders, whom he described as "little Saddams." Mr. Warren said his purpose is to enlist "one billion foot soldiers for the Kingdom of God" in the developing world. And the stadium crowd roared its approval.

Celebrants included Paul Kagame, the president of Rwanda, a tiny east African country that lost hundreds of thousands of people when it suffered genocide in 1994. Catholic and Protestant clergy have been convicted in connection with that genocide. Yet Mr. Kagame announced that he would allow Mr. Warren to turn his country into the first purpose driven nation. The following month, 16 Rwandan religious leaders arrived in Orange County to begin religious training at Saddleback Church. Mr. Warren has said that his global initiative was developed "underground" and in "stealth". Presumably, this was done with the assistance of Mr. Carver, who directs the Purpose Driven Church in all its activities outside North America.

I hear time and time again the Islam is the religion of violence. Islam is the religion that endangers the world. The only reason the fundamentalist Christians have not resorted to terrorism more then they have (and, yes there have been plenty of terrorist attacks by fundamentalist Christians) is that they often have access to more "acceptable" avenues to pursue their agenda, as carpet bombing civilian populations with white phosphorus is deemed more acceptable than a suicide attack. If fundamentalist Christians lose their political prestige you can expect a series of terrorist attacks from their ranks. "Last Days Crusade" would be a likely organizational name.

I'm not saying all Christian are violent, the same as not all Muslims are violent. What I am saying is that Christianity holds no moral high ground over Islam. Both have factions that want to kill all the infidels. Fundamentalism is the problem, not any particular religion.

Visiting the Old House of Clocks

Current Mood  - peaceful peaceful
Current Music  - traffic

As I stated in an earlier post: the old [info]house_of_clocks, which due to its dilapidated condition was sometimes called the Crackhouse of Clocks, was completely renovated and turned into a condo a couple years after we moved out. [info]purpleglitter and I went to the open house today to check the place out. The layout of the place was virtually the only thing that was familiar. The place is astounding, wonderful. I'd love to move back in if I could afford it. Even if I could afford it, however, the housing market is poised on the verge of a giant bubble burst and now would definitely not the time to be buying.

Motivated Selling

Date and Time  - Mar. 28th, 2006, 01:32 pm

Current Mood  - determined determined
Current Music  - traffic

I want to have a yard sale sometime in April. I have the perfect location, right on a busy street. I need to clean out my closets first and see what I have that I can actually sell. Hopefully this could provide a much needed cash infusion.

Will this actually happen? I don't know. Maintaining motivation is always an issue, and is something I need to very much work on. Many attempts at projects such as a yard sale end up falling away and becoming forgotten. I need to work on follow through. I need to work on not giving up. I need to keep moving.

Unfortunately, these things are easier said than done. My words are cheap, I must develop the discipline and the modes of action needed to make my words a reality.

Time and Place

Date and Time  - Mar. 12th, 2006, 10:18 am

Current Music  - budiges gurgling

Out of curiosity yesterday, I did a search on Google for the address of the old [info]house_of_clocks. First I tried "1261 Mass Ave". Nothing. I tried "1261 Massachusetts Avenue" and found the building. Finally, trying a combination of both approaches with "1261 Massachusetts Ave" I found the old [info]house_of_clocks being listed for sale as a condominium. Having passed by the old [info]house_of_clocks in Arlington Heights many times recently, I knew that the old apartment was being sold as a condominium, however it was interesting to read the description given of the place:

Arlington – $409,900

Spectacular renovation in 2004. This top floor 3 bedroom unit features new kitchen with granite, stainless appliances, ceramic tile floor, and new baths with ceramic tile floor. Hardwood floors throughout, spacious living room, private W/d, rear porch, large storage area, and deeded parking for 2. Windows, heat and hot water systems new in 2004. Steps to the "t" & shops. Don't miss this one!

Listing InformationAmenities and Features
Listing ID70332410Near Public Transportation
Price$409,900Swimming Pool
Bedrooms3Tennis Court
TypeCondoWalk/jog Trails
Sq. Ft.1,256

The apartment I remember is quite different. It was billed as a 4 bedroom with 1 bathroom. It definitely didn't have anything like stainless appliances, ceramic tile floors, or a granite kitchen. The building had neither and still has neither tennis courts and swimming pools, I imagine that the references to those in the listing are meant as "nearby" as is with the bike trail and public transit.

When we lived there, the entire three decker was completely run down and neglected by an elderly landlord that was in over her head trying to manage her many properties. Due to the dilapidated condition, we used to jokingly refer to our place as "the Crackhouse of Clocks". [info]purpleglitter is making arrangements for us to look at the place as "potential buyers". I'd really love to see the changes. I doubt I'll recognise it at all. Just from the times I've passed it, I can see how much it's changed. The white picket fence in the neatly trimmed front yard advertises the new nature of the place. Time moves on.

Why I am Against Psychiatry

Date and Time  - Feb. 26th, 2006, 12:47 am

Current Mood  - bitchy bitchy
Current Music  - silence

I am against psychiatry because psychiatrists are now giving hard-core antipsychotics to kindergarteners and Prozac to toddlers. I'm against psychiatry because much of their drugs have nasty permanent debilitating side effects such as tardive dyskinesia, and deadly side effects such as significantly increased diabetes risk and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. I'm against psychiatry because no psychiatrist can adequately explain what a "chemical imbalance" looks like or what a proper "chemical balance" would be. I am against psychiatry because there are no objective tests for mental "illnesses", all diagnoses are made subjectively based on the opinions of individual psychiatrists who regularly come to differing conclusions regarding the same patient. I am against psychiatry because if mental "illness" actually is biological in origin, neurologists should be handling it on a medical basis. I am against psychiatry because psych drugs simply mask the symptoms and don't actually help patients get better. I am against psychiatry because a friend of mine was told that her son could no longer attend school unless he took addictive amphetamines. I am against psychiatry because of the ongoing campaigns to force dangerous drugs and electroconvulsive therapy on adults that have committed no crime. I am against psychiatry because the psychiatry has become more about selling drugs than helping patients.
