Things to Try

Date and Time  - Oct. 30th, 2007, 02:09 pm

Current Mood  - blank blank
Current Music  - Mazzy Star - Mary of Silence

From the The Universal Household Assistant or What Every One Should Know (1884):

Things to try. — Try popcorn for nausea.
   Try cranberries for malaria.
   Try a sun-bath for rheumatism.
Try ginger ale for stomach cramps.
Try clam broth for a weak stomach.
   Try cranberry poultice for erysipelas.
Try a wet towel to the back of the neck when sleepless.
Try swallowing saliva when troubled with sour stomach.
Try eating fresh radishes and yellow turnips for gravel.
Try eating onions and horseradish to relieve dropsical swellings.
Try buttermilk for removal of freckles, tan, and butternut stains.
Try taking your cod liver oil in tomato catsup, if you want to make it palatable.
Try hard cider -- a wine-glass three times a day -- for ague and rheumatism.
Try taking a nap in the afternoon if you are going to be out late in the evening.
Try breathing the fumes of turpentine or carbolic acid to remove whooping cough.
Try a cloth wrung out from cold water put about the neck at night for sore throat.
Try snuffing powdered borax up the nostrils for catarrhal "cold in the head."
Try walking with your hands behind you if you find yourself becoming bent forward.
Try a silk handkerchief over the face when obliged to go against a cold piercing wind.
Try planting sunflowers in your garden if compelled to live in a malarial district.

Bubbles

Date and Time  - Apr. 13th, 2004, 01:08 am

Bubbles

bubbles
float
up

everything twists
moving
rocking

time drips
like the candle
burning away

fire crackles
behind me
hold on to this

increasing odd
it looks just like it
red stains on a white dress

cracked with age
forgot, yet bright
looping back now

bubbles
float
down

The Day Goes On

Date and Time  - Feb. 5th, 2004, 01:40 pm

The Day Goes On

broken bones litter the street
cars zoom down bloodstained highways
the fires in the alleyways are cold
the day goes on

someone discovers she cannot fly
broken wings fall from above
the rooftop didn't provide enough lift
the day goes on

cnn offers up the same old spin
twisted metal and mortor shells
screams echo for thousands of miles
the day goes on

the stench is overpowering
a bitter storm approaches from the west
the clock is still ticking
the day goes on

From Davis to the Meadow

Date and Time  - May. 23rd, 2002, 04:40 pm

Current Mood  - mellow mellow
Current Music  - Love Spirals Downward - Waiting for the Sunrise

I met [info]riga_mortia at the Diesel Café this morning, at around 11:00am. We had coffee, then I went to the Social Security office to hand drop off papers and hopefully meet with someone. After waiting in line for about 15 minutes and being told that I'd talk to the caseworker over the phone tomorrow, I met up with [info]riga_mortia again at Goodwill.

At Goodwill I found a fabulous blue dress that looks right out of the 50's. It goes perfectly with my cat's eye glasses.

[info]riga_mortia and I went back to my house, I changed, and we went to the Great Meadow. Decided to wear a pair of shoes that have been lying around the house for some time, but were falling apart. I very quickly screwed them back together before we left. Unfortunately on the way to the Great Meadow, the screws started poking up into my foot (the flat ends, not the pointy ends, but it still hurt my feet).

We had a very nice picnic of oranges, grapes, green olive tapenade on mini toasts, and green tea. The clearing we chose was very peaceful, sitting on the side of a hill with a nice view of the sun drenched meadow.

Getting up after the picnic, I learned a very important fashion lesson: white nylons are a poor choice if you plan on sitting on the ground..

On the way home, walking by Mal's Towing, one of the workers looked at me and said "How's it going?". Thinking nothing of it, I nodded and walked on. Annoyed he said that he was just trying to be polite because we were neighbors. I didn't recognize him as one of the downstairs tenants. I apologized and said I was just spacey. But, honestly, I still didn't recognize him.

Twisted and Broken Mirror

Twisted and Broken Mirror

a twisted
and broken
mirror

bent reflections
of what was
and might have been

shards with
razor points
rip into skin

bloodstained
never alone
many faces

scattered pieces
reflect sharply
off each other
the spiritual light
bounces until
all that is left
is a jumbled mess
of confusion
and uncertainty

a mirror
twisted
and broken
