Mental illness has become so loosely defined that in 2005 the National Comorbidity Survey found that 25% of Americans had a diagnosable mental illness withing a timespan of one year and half of Americans had a diagnosable mental illness at some point in their lives. When we're talking about numbers like on fourth and one half, we're no longer talking about "illness" we're talking about natural variation.
